Labour Party Factional Youth Leaders Consider Political Alignment With Tinubu Ahead of 2027

Youth leaders belonging to the Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party have opened discussions on a possible political alignment with groups supporting President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The proposal emerged from a virtual meeting involving the faction’s National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, five zonal youth leaders and youth leaders from 32 states.

A statement issued by the Labour Party Youth Leader in Edo State, Ken Omusi, said the meeting examined the continuing internal crisis within the party and the political direction of its youth constituency ahead of 2027.

Participants reportedly authorised Ahanotu to begin consultations with the All Progressives Congress and political organisations associated with President Tinubu, including the Renewed Hope Movement, City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups.

The youth leaders said they wanted to explore the possibility of political cooperation and determine whether such an arrangement could provide greater opportunities for youth participation.

They expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as insufficient recognition, engagement and support for young party members during and after the 2023 general election.

According to the statement, participants argued that young Nigerians required political structures that would provide greater opportunities for leadership development, economic empowerment and participation in national decision making.

The consultations do not yet amount to a formal endorsement of Tinubu.

The youth leaders said discussions would continue with relevant stakeholders before any final position was reached.

A physical meeting is also expected to hold in Abuja to consider the outcome of the consultations and determine the next course of action.

The meeting additionally reviewed policies of the Tinubu administration in human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reform, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare.

Participants reportedly expressed different opinions about the impact of those policies.

The development adds another dimension to the prolonged internal crisis within the Labour Party.

In May 2026, Ahanotu emerged as presidential candidate of the Julius Abure faction, while another faction presented Chibuzo Okereke as its candidate.

The competing candidacies further demonstrated the divisions that have continued to affect the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The youth leaders said consultations and consensus building would continue before a definitive political decision was announced.
