The Labour Party has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for correcting what it described as an earlier omission of the party and its candidate from the list of contestants for the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party recalled that when INEC initially released the list of political parties and candidates cleared to participate in the by-elections across the country, the Labour Party and its candidate were excluded from the Enugu North Senatorial poll despite meeting all constitutional and statutory requirements.
The party said the issue was subsequently resolved following engagements with the leadership of the electoral commission, leading to the inclusion of its candidate in the by-election.
According to the statement, the Labour Party is now fully prepared to participate in the election and offer what it described as credible and people-oriented representation to the people of Enugu North Senatorial District for the remainder of the 10th Senate.
The party expressed confidence in the leadership of INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, praising the commission for addressing the issue and ensuring compliance with principles of fairness and due process.
It noted that the decision to rectify the omission had helped reinforce public confidence in the electoral process and demonstrated the commission’s responsiveness to legitimate concerns raised by stakeholders.
The Labour Party also appreciated its members, supporters and well-wishers for their concern and continued support during the period of uncertainty over the party’s participation in the poll.
As campaigns enter the final stage ahead of the by-elections, the party extended its best wishes to its candidates contesting in Enugu North, Nasarawa North, Rivers South-East and other constituencies where by-elections are scheduled to hold.
The party expressed optimism that the elections would not only yield favourable outcomes for its candidates but also contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic culture and deepening public trust in the electoral process.
