The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who said the retired military officer died from health complications while in captivity.
According to the government, Major General Abubakar succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension despite ongoing efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his freedom.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.
The government noted that the late officer’s abduction and eventual death represented a significant loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, given his contributions to national service.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed profound sorrow over the development and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. He described the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges facing the country and the urgent need to intensify efforts against criminal groups.
The governor reiterated the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are apprehended and prosecuted.
He also reassured residents of the administration’s determination to combat banditry and other forms of criminality, stressing that efforts to protect lives and property across the state would continue unabated.
The government prayed for the peaceful repose of the late retired Major General’s soul and called on citizens to continue supporting security agencies in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
