Jigawa Governor Appoints Lawan Sani as 17th Emir of Gumel

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel.

Secretary to the State Government Bala Ibrahim announced the appointment at a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists secretariat in Dutse on Sunday, 6 September 2026, saying the decision followed consultations with the Gumel Emirate Council and its kingmakers and was made in accordance with the Jigawa State Emirate Council Law.

The appointment takes immediate effect, filling the vacancy left by the death of the new monarch’s father, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani, who led the emirate for more than four decades.

Lawan previously served as Ciroman Gumel, a role the state government said gave him grounding in the traditions, administration and affairs of the emirate.

Namadi called on residents and other stakeholders to rally behind the new monarch as he takes on responsibility for promoting peace, unity and development across Gumel Emirate. The government said arrangements for the formal presentation of the staff of office would be announced later.
