Iyabo Obasanjo Resigns from APC, Cites Alleged Maltreatment and Lack of Respect

A former senator and governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the ruling party, citing alleged maltreatment, rejection, and lack of respect from the party leadership.

Obasanjo’s resignation was contained in a letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Yemi Sanusi.

The professor of epidemiology and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed dissatisfaction with the process that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s governorship candidate through a consensus arrangement.

According to her, the process did not comply with the party’s established rules and guidelines. She stated that although she had agreed to abide by a consensus arrangement, she was not consulted before Adeola was announced as the consensus candidate.

Obasanjo further alleged that some of her supporters were violently prevented from accessing the venue where Adeola’s emergence was announced.

Despite her reservations, she said she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and issued a statement congratulating Adeola on the night of his emergence, while also pledging support for his gubernatorial ambition.

She disclosed that Adeola later contacted her to appreciate her support and subsequently paid her a visit about two weeks later. During the meeting, she said her supporters presented three requests to the senator, stressing that she had informed him the requests were not mandatory but expected feedback on whether they could be accommodated.

According to Obasanjo, Adeola promised to respond within a week but failed to do so more than two months after the meeting.

The former lawmaker said the alleged neglect, coupled with what she described as continued maltreatment and rejection since joining the APC, informed her decision to leave the party.

However, she commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support during her time in the party. She also praised the Ogun APC chairman, Sanusi, as well as leaders of the Ogun Central APC caucus led by Chief Soremi for their positive disposition toward her.

Her resignation comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ogun State.
