Israelis Mark Oct. 7 Anniversary as Gaza War Continues to Shape Region

Israelis on Wednesday commemorated the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that killed about 1,200 people and resulted in the abduction of 251 hostages, an event that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

Across southern Israel, families gathered at memorial sites, bomb shelters, road junctions and the location of the music festival attacked by Hamas-led militants to honour victims of what remains the deadliest attack in Israel’s history.

The anniversary is particularly significant as all hostages captured during the attack have now returned home, marking a new phase of national mourning and reflection for many families.

For Palestinians in Gaza, the anniversary highlights the continuing humanitarian and economic consequences of the war. Large portions of the territory remain devastated, with many residents still living in overcrowded displacement camps amid damaged infrastructure and ongoing security concerns.

The conflict has also reshaped the broader Middle East, with tensions extending into Lebanon, Israel’s confrontation with Hezbollah, and wider regional instability involving Iran and the United States. Observers say the events of October 7 and the subsequent war continue to influence security and geopolitical dynamics across the region.
