The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to public concerns over alleged AI-generated photographs discovered in the Preliminary Register of Voters recently published on its website, assuring Nigerians that the records are already under review.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the online register published on October 26, 2026, is the same preliminary register displayed nationwide at Registration Areas between October 9 and 15 during the Claims and Objections exercise.
INEC said a number of questionable voter registration records had already been identified during the physical display exercise and were flagged for further investigation and corrective action.
According to the commission, the online publication reflects the original preliminary register and does not yet include the ongoing data-cleanup exercise.
The electoral body stressed that the preliminary register should not be mistaken for the final certified register, noting that public scrutiny and review are essential components of the voter verification process.
INEC added that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical and procedural lapses, and promised to take appropriate action based on verified findings.
The commission commended citizens and stakeholders who brought the concerns to public attention, saying their vigilance contributes to improving the accuracy and integrity of the voter register.
INEC reiterated its commitment to completing all verification, adjudication and data-cleanup processes ahead of the certification of the final Register of Voters scheduled for December 15, 2026.
The commission assured Nigerians that all confirmed irregularities would be addressed in accordance with established procedures.
