Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has launched the 2026 wet season sale and distribution of fertilizer and other farm inputs, part of a push to lift food production and strengthen agriculture.
The state has procured 12,000 metric tons of NPK 20:10:10 fertilizer, about 240,000 bags, to be sold to farmers at N32,000 per 50kg bag, half the prevailing market price. The governor described the timely supply as proof of his administration’s drive to revive farming and keep Gombe among Nigeria’s leading agricultural states.
Alongside the fertilizer, he said the government would hand out farm machinery free of charge, including hundreds of water pumps, motorized weeders and sprayers, rice transplanters, peanut shellers, milling machines and walking tractors.
Inuwa Yahaya cautioned that subsidized inputs alone would not transform agriculture unless farmers adopted modern, knowledge driven methods, urging a move away from rain dependent farming towards climate smart and technology based approaches and closer attention to weather advisories.
He also stressed peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, calling on security agencies, traditional rulers and youth groups to deepen dialogue and vigilance, and warned that anyone disrupting community peace or sabotaging the distribution would face the law. A special committee, he said, had been set up to ensure transparency, with security agencies directed to guard against diversion and fraud.
