FG to Deploy 10,000 Electric Tricycles to Boost Public Transportation

The Federal Government has announced plans to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles as part of efforts to improve public transportation and promote sustainable mobility across the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, stating that the initiative would be implemented through the North East Development Commission.

According to the Vice President, the electric tricycles are scheduled for distribution in August 2026 and will initially serve communities across the North-East region, with plans to expand the programme to other parts of the country.

Shettima said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the replication of the initiative nationwide through the various regional development commissions.

He explained that the administration’s broader transport reform agenda is aimed at transforming Nigeria’s transportation network from a fragmented system into an integrated logistics chain capable of supporting economic growth and national development.

According to him, the government is working to ensure greater connectivity between ports, rail lines, compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered trucks, inland waterways, airports, and local feeder roads to facilitate commerce, agriculture, industry, and national integration.

The Vice President noted that key pillars of the transport reform programme include the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas, modernization of port infrastructure, and the strengthening of the country’s logistics network.

The planned deployment of electric tricycles is expected to provide affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options while creating economic opportunities for operators and supporting the government’s clean energy objectives.

The initiative forms part of the administration’s efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure and improve mobility across Nigeria.
