FG Rejects NLC Demand for Fresh Minimum Wage Review

The Federal Government has informed the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that the next review of the national minimum wage is due on June 1, 2027, insisting that any attempt to reopen negotiations now would be premature and inconsistent with existing law.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, stated this in a response to a recent NLC communiqué demanding a new wage review and a reduction in petrol prices.

According to the minister, the National Minimum Wage Act, as amended in 2024, provides for a review of the wage every three years.

He noted that the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in July 2024, represented a more than 133 per cent increase from the previous ₦30,000 wage.

“The lifespan of the current wage will expire and become due for review on June 1, 2027,” Dingyadi said.

The minister maintained that commencing another review less than two years after implementation would disrupt the industrial relations framework established under the law.

He, however, acknowledged the economic difficulties facing workers and highlighted government interventions aimed at easing the cost of living, including the Presidential CNG Initiative and food security programmes.

Dingyadi assured the labour movement that government remained committed to dialogue and would convene a tripartite committee for the next wage review at the appropriate time.
