The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended the deadline for public submissions on the proposed legislation to August 21, 2026.
The original deadline was August 13.
Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila said the additional time was intended to allow individuals, institutions and organisations to prepare more detailed memoranda and position papers.
The working group wants the proposed law to benefit from wider consultation before a final draft is submitted for legislative consideration.
The National Policing Bill is expected to address the operational, administrative, institutional and funding structure of a reformed policing system.
Key issues include sustainable financing, command structures, recruitment, training, jurisdiction, coordination among security agencies and safeguards against political interference.
Gbajabiamila said accountability, professionalism and protection of citizens’ rights would also be central to the proposed framework.
Legal practitioners, civil society groups, security professionals, state governments, academics and members of the public were encouraged to use the extended period to make submissions.
The working group said all memoranda must be submitted through the official portal by 5 p.m. West Africa Time on August 21.
At the end of the consultation, the group is expected to produce a final draft for onward legislative processing.
The Presidency said broad participation was necessary because the proposed reform could significantly reshape policing and internal security across the federation.
