Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has presented a new fire fighting truck to Bayelsa International Airport as part of efforts to strengthen emergency response and operational safety.
The 2026 model equipment was procured from Germany and handed over to airport management at Government House in Yenagoa.
Diri said the truck was one of the most modern pieces of fire fighting equipment available to the airport.
He expressed confidence that it would improve the facility’s ability to respond to emergencies.
Airport Managing Director Nelson Calmday said the airport had requested additional fire fighting support because one of its existing fire tenders had become unserviceable.
He said the new truck offered greater capacity than a conventional water tanker because it carried both water and specialised fire suppression materials.
Calmday thanked the state government for providing equipment beyond the airport’s initial request.
He also gave an update on the state’s second aircraft.
The ATR 72 600 was awaiting procurement and installation of its main landing gear before being flown from Morocco to Nigeria.
Once delivered, the aircraft is expected to join the fleet operated by Pioneer Airlines.
The state government said the investments were intended to strengthen aviation services and improve the operational capability of the airport.
