Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboué has revealed the extent of his personal and financial struggles, saying he “lost everything” following a difficult divorce and career setbacks.
The retired right-back, who made over 200 appearances for Arsenal, said his life began to unravel toward the end of his playing career after separating from his ex-wife, Aurélie.
Eboué’s troubles deepened in 2016 when his contract with Sunderland was terminated after he was handed a one-year ban by FIFA. The suspension stemmed from his failure to settle a debt of more than £850,000 owed to his agent.
Speaking in a recent podcast interview, Eboué described the ban as a turning point that triggered both his professional and personal collapse.
“They wanted me to pay €1 million, but I chose to stop playing football instead,” he said. “My agent reported me to FIFA, and I was banned. I moved back to Turkey to avoid attention, and that’s when my marriage broke down.”
The former Ivory Coast international said the divorce cost him significantly, including multiple properties and luxury possessions.
“I lost a lot—three houses in England, many cars, and a substantial amount of money. Everything I built during my career in England was gone,” he said.
Eboué also spoke about the emotional toll of the experience, revealing that he has not seen his children in years and endured a period of deep personal hardship.
At his lowest point, he said he lived in isolation and took measures to avoid public attention, including boarding up his windows to keep paparazzi away.
The former defender’s story highlights the challenges some professional athletes face after retirement, particularly when compounded by legal disputes, financial mismanagement, and personal crises.
