The reported plan by Desmond Elliot to seek a fourth term in the Lagos State House of Assembly is generating growing resistance within Surulere Constituency I and among members of his party, the All Progressives Congress.
Elliot, who has represented the constituency since 2015, was re-elected in 2019 and 2023, completing three consecutive terms spanning over a decade in office. As the 2027 elections approach, indications of a potential fourth-term bid have triggered debate over performance, representation, and political rotation.
State lawmakers are primarily responsible for enacting laws and facilitating development projects at the grassroots level, including infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Consequently, constituents often assess their representatives based on tangible improvements and accessibility.
Elliot’s political career has been bolstered by strong backing within the APC, including alignment with key figures such as Femi Gbajabiamila, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chief of Staff to the President. His background in the entertainment industry has also contributed to his visibility and electoral success.
However, opposition to his continued tenure is emerging from within his constituency. Civic groups, including the Surulere Accountability Forum, have voiced concerns over his performance, arguing that more than 12 years in office should have translated into more significant progress in infrastructure, policy delivery, and community engagement. The group has called for a change in representation.
Within the APC, opinions appear divided. While some party members support Elliot’s experience and continuity in office, others are advocating for fresh leadership, citing the need for rotation after three terms.
Public perception also remains a factor, particularly among younger voters, with Elliot’s remarks during the 2020 #EndSARS protests continuing to feature in political discourse.
As the political landscape in Surulere evolves, Elliot’s potential bid is likely to test both his track record and his standing within the constituency that has supported him over the years.
