African Democratic Congress National Chairman David Mark has urged a visiting delegation of the Economic Community of West African States to emphasize the importance of a transparent and peaceful Nigerian general election.
Mark spoke in Abuja during what the party described as a pre-election fact-finding engagement with regional representatives.
According to a statement attributed to ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party raised concerns about election administration, the neutrality of public institutions and the risk of political violence.
Mark argued that Nigeria’s political stability had consequences beyond its borders and that credible electoral procedures would help prevent disputes and wider regional tension.
He said the ADC was committed to peaceful conduct before, during and after the election but wanted ECOWAS to convey its concerns to the federal government and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The delegation’s leader, identified in the supplied account as former Sierra Leonean Vice President Victor Bockarie Foh, reportedly said the mission was assessing election preparedness and the political environment.
He was said to have assured the party that concerns raised during the visit would be reported to the regional organization.
The allegations about institutional interference were made by the opposition party and are not independently substantiated in the supplied account. The mission’s identity, mandate and election timetable should be verified through ECOWAS and INEC records.
