CBN Governor Cardoso Receives Central Bank of the Year Award in London

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has been named Central Bank Governor of the Year at the Central Banking Awards ceremony held in London.

The award recognises outstanding leadership in monetary policy, financial stability, and institutional reform across global central banking institutions.

In his acceptance speech, Cardoso expressed appreciation to Central Banking Publications and the award panel for the honour, describing it as a reflection of collective institutional effort rather than personal achievement.

He dedicated the award to the board, management, and staff of the CBN, commending their commitment to reform, professionalism, and efforts to strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s financial system.

“I accept this award on behalf of the board, management and staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Cardoso said. “Above all, it belongs to the many dedicated professionals who serve our institution with integrity, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”

The CBN governor noted that central banks around the world have faced significant economic and policy challenges in recent years, with Nigeria also navigating periods of inflationary pressure, exchange rate adjustments, and broader financial sector reforms.

He highlighted key policy measures undertaken by the apex bank, including steps to tackle elevated inflation, reforms in the foreign exchange market, and investments in digital and financial infrastructure aimed at strengthening long-term economic resilience.

Cardoso also pointed to major milestones achieved under his leadership, including Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list and the completion of a comprehensive banking sector recapitalisation exercise. He said these achievements reflected coordinated efforts among multiple institutions and stakeholders.

According to him, the CBN’s reform agenda remains focused on restoring policy credibility, strengthening institutional resilience, and laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.

While acknowledging that further work remains, Cardoso expressed optimism about ongoing economic improvements and growing investor confidence, attributing progress to government support, market participants, development partners, and the resilience of Nigerians.

“We receive this recognition with humility,” he said. “We see it not as a destination, but as encouragement to continue the important work ahead.”

He reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment to maintaining monetary and financial stability, safeguarding public confidence, and carrying out its mandate with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.

The award marks a significant international endorsement of Nigeria’s central bank at a time when economic reforms remain central to the country’s recovery and long-term growth strategy.
