At its 50th anniversary, the Christian association recognises the governor’s service as he urges leaders to keep faith separate from political ambition.
The Christian Association of Nigeria has presented its Christian Icon Award to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration in Abuja.
CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh said the recognition reflected the association’s assessment of Oborevwori’s public service, commitment to Christian values and contribution to society. He described ethical leadership, compassion and integrity as essential qualities for public office holders.
The event at the National Christian Centre drew political leaders and public officials, including former Delta governor Ifeanyi Okowa and members of the state’s legislative and executive leadership.
Okoh urged the Church to speak for people whose concerns are often overlooked, while cautioning that religious institutions should avoid indiscriminate political opposition. He said public interventions would carry greater credibility when based on evidence, fairness and careful assessment.
Accepting the award, Oborevwori said political responsibility should not displace religious conviction. He described the honor as an encouragement to continue serving the public and recalled his longstanding involvement in church activities, including ushering.
The governor also appealed for unity among Christian organizations, saying stronger cooperation across the association’s constituent blocs could help them contribute more effectively to national development.
The ceremony brought together questions of faith and governance at a time when religious organizations remain influential voices in public affairs. Both the association and the governor emphasized the importance of service, character and accountability.
