A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George, has raised concerns over what he described as attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to weaken Nigeria’s democratic system.
In a statement issued on Thursday, George alleged that recent actions and comments from both the ruling party and the electoral body suggest a deliberate effort to sideline opposition candidates ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He claimed that the developments point to an agenda aimed at ensuring the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that such moves could erode democratic principles and institutions.
The PDP stalwart likened the situation to the biblical account of Abimelech, cautioning against what he described as a dangerous concentration of power and disregard for democratic values.
George called on political leaders and elders across party lines to speak out against actions capable of undermining the nation’s democracy, stressing that silence in the face of perceived injustice could have grave consequences.
He also expressed concern over the state of security in the country, arguing that the government should prioritise addressing insecurity rather than, in his view, weakening opposition structures.
According to him, Nigeria must not be allowed to descend into instability, urging citizens and stakeholders to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic institutions.
George further criticised INEC, alleging that the electoral body was no longer acting independently, but rather serving the interests of the ruling party—an accusation he said poses a serious threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
