The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to support ongoing peace and stability initiatives in the Horn of Africa.
The announcement was made on behalf of the African Union Commission, which stated that Obasanjo will assist efforts aimed at strengthening dialogue, building confidence among stakeholders, and advancing reconciliation processes in the region.
According to the Commission, the appointment forms part of broader AU efforts to address long-standing political and security challenges in the Horn of Africa.
Describing the appointment, the AU Commission Chairperson said Obasanjo brings “unparalleled experience, wisdom, and credibility” to the assignment.
In his new role, the former Nigerian leader is expected to engage relevant parties and stakeholders across the region in support of sustained peace efforts and stability-building initiatives.
The African Union Commission expressed appreciation to Obasanjo for accepting the responsibility and reaffirmed its continued commitment to promoting lasting peace and security across Africa, particularly in conflict-affected areas of the Horn of Africa.
