Arsenal Edge West Ham Amid VAR Controversy to Move Closer to Premier League Title

Arsenal moved a step closer to winning the Premier League title after a dramatic 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday at the London Stadium.

The fiercely contested derby was decided late in the second half when Leandro Trossard scored with a deflected strike seven minutes from full time to hand Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial win in the title race.

However, the match ended in controversy after West Ham were denied a stoppage-time equaliser following a lengthy VAR review. Callum Wilson thought he had rescued a point for the hosts after firing into the net when Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya spilled the ball inside the area.

Referee Chris Kavanagh eventually ruled out the goal for a foul by Pablo on Raya, with VAR officials concluding that the West Ham player had impeded the goalkeeper during the build-up. The decision sparked loud protests from West Ham supporters, who argued the contact was minimal and also claimed Arsenal players committed fouls in the same sequence.

The victory leaves Arsenal five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola’s side still have a game in hand.

City had kept the pressure on the league leaders with a 3-0 win over Brentford on Saturday and could reduce the gap if they defeat Crystal Palace in midweek.

Despite the controversy, Arsenal showed resilience and determination in a tense encounter as they continue their push for a first Premier League title in 22 years.

Mikel Arteta’s team are also chasing European glory after reaching the UEFA Champions League final for the first time since 2006. The North London side will face Paris Saint-Germain in the final later this month.

Arsenal supporters celebrated wildly at the final whistle, knowing the result could prove decisive in one of the most dramatic title races in recent Premier League history.
