Akpoti-Uduaghan Courts European Investors for Kogi, Renews Push to Revive Ajaokuta Steel

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has hosted diplomats from Belgium, Denmark, Italy and Spain in Kogi State as part of efforts to attract investment to local industries, tourism and cultural enterprises. The delegation toured historic sites in Lokoja before meeting artisans and community members in Kogi Central.

The programme highlighted pottery, textile weaving, soap production, shea butter processing and other traditional businesses. The senator said direct exposure to these activities could help foreign partners identify opportunities for trade, skills development and market access, particularly for women and young entrepreneurs.

According to her office, the ambassadors expressed interest in the region’s commercial potential and praised the work of local producers. However, the visit did not include announced investment commitments, and any future projects will depend on follow-up negotiations.

Akpoti-Uduaghan also renewed her call for the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company. Her office said a proposed visit inside the complex could not proceed because permission was not granted, leaving the diplomats to view the facility from outside.

She argued that restoring the long-idle steel plant would create jobs, support manufacturing and strengthen Nigeria’s industrial supply chains. The diplomatic visit has opened conversations, but the practical measure of success will be whether they result in funded projects, reliable market connections and lasting local employment.
