The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the selection of former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made by the party’s national leadership following consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from across the country’s geopolitical zones.
According to the ADC, Amaechi’s emergence followed the conclusion of the party’s presidential primary election, where he finished as runner-up and garnered significant support from delegates nationwide.
The party stated that the proposed ticket pairing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Amaechi represents a strategic alliance aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
In a statement, the ADC described Amaechi as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures, citing his record of service in both the legislative and executive arms of government.
The party noted that Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later as Minister of Transportation, where he oversaw major transportation and railway development projects.
According to the ADC, his experience in governance, public administration and infrastructure development would strengthen the party’s leadership credentials ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party also highlighted Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South region and across Southern Nigeria, describing him as a leader with a reputation for building broad-based political alliances and fostering national cohesion.
ADC officials said the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects a national outlook that bridges regional, political and generational divides while offering Nigerians an alternative platform focused on economic growth, security, job creation and national unity.
The party expressed confidence that the partnership would strengthen its coalition and mobilise support across the country as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
ADC further called on party members, coalition partners, civil society organisations, youth and women groups, and other stakeholders to support its campaign, saying the ticket is committed to delivering effective leadership and advancing national development.
The party said it remains focused on presenting what it described as a credible platform capable of restoring public confidence in governance and addressing the challenges confronting the country.
