The African Democratic Congress has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing his administration of worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and poverty across Nigeria while attempting to discredit the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party described Tinubu’s recent comments against opposition parties as “self serving and deeply insensitive.”
The reaction followed President Tinubu’s acceptance speech after emerging as the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress for the 2027 election, where he reportedly stated that opposition parties lacked the vision to move Nigeria forward and would only take the country backwards.
Responding, the ADC said it was ironic that such remarks were coming from an administration it described as one of the most difficult periods in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The party accused the Federal Government of presiding over worsening inflation, food insecurity, insecurity, and economic decline, arguing that millions of Nigerians were now facing severe hardship under Tinubu’s economic reforms.
According to the ADC, businesses are shutting down under economic pressure, household purchasing power has collapsed, and many farming communities remain under threat from banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks.
The party further referenced projections that nearly 35 million Nigerians could face acute food insecurity during the 2026 lean season, while millions remain displaced by insecurity across parts of the country.
“If the opposition is going to take the country backwards, it would be to reset it from the edge of the dangerous precipice that the current administration has placed it on,” the statement said.
The ADC maintained that the opposition was not responsible for the country’s economic challenges, insecurity, or the declining value of the naira, insisting that Nigerians were fully aware of the realities facing the country since the current administration took office.
The opposition party also questioned the outcome of the APC presidential primary, particularly the announcement that President Tinubu secured 10.99 million votes.
Describing the figure as an “unbelievable concoction,” the ADC alleged that the result was an attempt to prepare Nigerians for what it called a planned manipulation of the 2027 general election.
“It may appear laughable, but it reflects a subtle attempt to condition Nigerians for the kind of fantastic rigging being planned by the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement added.
The ADC insisted that Nigerians deserved “competent leadership and compassionate governance,” adding that the opposition remained committed to offering what it described as a credible alternative capable of moving the country forward.
