Nigeria and Cyprus Pledge Closer Trade, Investment and Education Cooperation

Nigeria and Cyprus have signalled their intention to deepen diplomatic and economic cooperation following the presentation of credentials by Nigeria’s ambassador, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

Ufochukwu, Nigeria’s ambassador to Israel with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, presented her Letters of Credence at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, formally commencing her diplomatic duties in the Mediterranean country.

She conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s greetings and pledged to work toward stronger bilateral relations during her tenure, with attention to trade, investment, education and political dialogue.

Christodoulides welcomed the envoy and described relations between the two countries as grounded in longstanding friendship and people-to-people connections. He acknowledged Nigeria’s role in West African affairs and expressed Cyprus’s readiness to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Both sides also identified opportunities for closer engagement through bilateral and multilateral channels, including collaboration on shared challenges.

For Nigeria, stronger links with Cyprus could create openings for business partnerships, academic exchanges and improved engagement with Nigerians living on the island. Cypriot enterprises could likewise explore commercial opportunities in Nigeria.

No specific investment agreements or implementation timelines were announced in the account of the ceremony. The practical outcome of the renewed commitment will therefore depend on subsequent engagement among government agencies, businesses and educational institutions.

Senior Cypriot officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission attended the accreditation ceremony.
