Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has renewed calls for accountability over the October 20, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate shooting, saying Nigerians are still waiting for answers six years after the incident.
In a post on his X account, Atiku questioned the continued absence of clarity over who ordered the shooting during the #EndSARS protests against police brutality.
“Six years after the Lekki shooting, Nigeria is still waiting for a clear answer to one devastating question: Who gave the order?” he stated.
The former vice president also referenced comments made by President Bola Tinubu during the protests, arguing that the focus should remain on accountability and justice for victims and their families.
Atiku said unresolved questions surrounding the incident had contributed to public distrust, while many young Nigerians continued to face economic hardship.
He further criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has been in power since 2015, over the state of the economy and the rising cost of living.
Citing the increase in petrol prices and transportation costs, Atiku argued that many Nigerians were struggling to maintain employment and meet basic needs.
He recounted the experience of a young woman who reportedly resigned from her job after finding that her earnings could no longer cover transportation expenses.
The former presidential candidate used the occasion to promote his Economic Recovery Plan, which he said would focus on reducing living costs, creating jobs, supporting students, protecting minimum-wage earners and cutting government waste.
According to Atiku, Nigerians, particularly the youth, deserve both accountability for the Lekki incident and economic policies that create better opportunities.
