President Tinubu Mourns Afenifere Leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti, Hails Legacy of Service at 100

President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Afenifere National Leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who passed away at the age of 100.

In a tribute issued on Tuesday, the President described Fasoranti as a patriarch, elder statesman and one of the last surviving titans of the progressive political movement founded by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Tinubu, on behalf of the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria, extended his condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom, the government and people of Ondo State, the South-West region and members of Afenifere.

The President said Fasoranti’s century-long life embodied integrity, discipline, selflessness and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people and the unity and progress of Nigeria.

He noted that the late elder statesman made significant contributions to national development through his roles as an educationist, school principal, Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State and later as leader of Afenifere.

According to Tinubu, Fasoranti remained steadfast throughout his life in advocating true federalism, social justice and accountable governance.

The President also praised the late Afenifere leader’s role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, saying he risked his life in the fight for the democratic system currently enjoyed by Nigerians.

Tinubu described Fasoranti as a man of principle whose disciplined lifestyle, moral authority and commitment to noble causes earned him widespread respect across the country.

“Our nation will sorely miss his voice of wisdom, moral authority and fatherly counsel, especially at a time when such guidance is greatly needed,” the President said.

Reflecting on Fasoranti’s centenary celebration on May 11, Tinubu said the occasion was not only a celebration of longevity but also of a legacy built on honour, service and sacrifice.

The President also recalled visiting Fasoranti’s residence in Akure in 2022 to inform him of his intention to contest the presidency, revealing that the Afenifere leader prayed and expressed confidence that he would become Nigeria’s President during his lifetime.

According to Tinubu, that prediction came to pass, a development he described as a testament to the late elder statesman’s faith and goodwill.

The President said he had hoped Fasoranti would live to witness what he described as the country’s journey toward greater economic growth and prosperity during a second term in office.

He, however, expressed gratitude to God for granting the late nationalist a long and fulfilled life dedicated to service and nation-building.

Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Fasoranti’s soul and asked God to grant strength and comfort to his family and all those mourning his passing.
