Manchester City could face severe sporting and financial consequences if allegations of financial rule breaches brought by the Premier League are proven, according to reports surrounding the ongoing case against the English champions.
The allegations centre on emails purportedly exchanged by senior club executives, which reportedly suggest that sponsorship revenues from UAE-based companies were inflated.
According to the claims, sponsorship deals involving Etihad Airways and telecommunications firm Etisalat were allegedly supplemented by funding from Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group and recorded as commercial income.
Additional documents reportedly allege that former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini received undisclosed payments through consultancy arrangements linked to a club in Abu Dhabi.
Manchester City has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that it possesses a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” supporting its position.
The club previously won a major legal victory in 2020 when the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a two-year UEFA Champions League ban. CAS ruled that many of UEFA’s allegations either could not be established or fell outside the relevant limitation period.
However, the current Premier League proceedings differ significantly because the league’s rules do not contain an equivalent time-bar restriction.
The charges cover a broad range of alleged breaches relating to financial reporting and compliance with league regulations.
Should the allegations be upheld, Manchester City could face penalties ranging from substantial points deductions to other disciplinary measures.
Recent Premier League cases involving Everton and Nottingham Forest demonstrated that breaches of financial regulations can result in sporting sanctions, including points deductions.
A major verdict against City could also trigger wider consequences across English football, with rival clubs potentially seeking compensation or challenging honours won during the period under scrutiny.
The uncertainty could further affect the futures of some of the club’s star players, including Norwegian striker Erling Haaland.
Despite the allegations, Manchester City continues to reject all claims and insists it will vigorously defend itself throughout the proceedings.
