The Edo State House of Assembly has rejected the resignation of its former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, and declared him impeached, eight days after he announced his resignation from office.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, had resigned as Speaker on Monday, August 17, 2026, amid reports that some lawmakers were planning to impeach him.
Following his resignation, the House suspended him indefinitely and removed the Majority Leader, Jonathan Ibhamawu, and Deputy Majority Leader, Addeh Emankhu Isibor, from their positions as principal officers.
The lawmakers subsequently elected Hon. Yekini Idiaye, representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as the new Speaker.
However, at Monday’s resumed plenary, Idiaye said the House had received an impeachment notice against Agbebaku signed by 17 of its 24 members.
He explained that the notice was formally presented by the Majority Leader during the previous Monday’s sitting.
According to Idiaye, Agbebaku’s resignation could not be recognised because the impeachment notice had already been initiated, adding that the notice was neither officially presented nor documented before the House suspended him.
He consequently declared that Agbebaku had been impeached and did not resign from office.
Following the announcement, the Majority Leader, Hon. Sunny Ojiezele, moved a motion for the formal impeachment of Agbebaku. The motion was seconded by Hon. Ahmed Waziri.
The Speaker subsequently directed the former Speaker to return all government property in his possession.
Idiaye warned that security agencies would be engaged if Agbebaku failed to comply with the directive or respond to the House’s demands.
The development further deepens the leadership crisis that has rocked the Edo State House of Assembly in recent days.
