Tinubu Urges Diaspora Nigerians to Move from Remittances to Productive Investment

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians abroad to channel more of their capital, expertise and international networks into productive investment at home.

The President said diaspora engagement should move beyond remittances and property purchases toward investments that expand production, create jobs and strengthen institutions.

His message was delivered at the 2026 Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference in Toronto.

Tinubu encouraged investment in agriculture, healthcare, technology, energy, housing, logistics, mining, education, creative industries and export manufacturing.

He said Nigerians abroad should consider professionally managed investment clubs, sector funds, venture networks and other structures that provide stronger governance and due diligence.

The President described remittances as an important foundation of diaspora engagement but said investment and professional expertise could produce wider economic benefits.

He also presented selected economic indicators as evidence that government reforms were beginning to stabilise the economy.

Tinubu acknowledged that Nigerians continued to face significant pressure from living costs and said the next phase of reform needed to concentrate on productivity, jobs and wider distribution of economic gains.

He said the government also needed to improve the conditions for diaspora investors through clearer rules, stronger property rights, transparent investment opportunities and faster dispute resolution.

The President cited financial products created for Nigerians living abroad as examples of steps intended to make participation easier.

Beyond capital, Tinubu urged professionals in the diaspora to mentor entrepreneurs, support hospitals, create research partnerships and connect Nigerian businesses to foreign markets.

He said criticism of government remained legitimate but urged Nigerians abroad to engage constructively and avoid actions that could damage the country.

Tinubu said the success of diaspora conferences should ultimately be measured by investment commitments, businesses funded, jobs created and institutions strengthened.
