President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the selection of a Nigerian linked customs modernisation platform for a major African Continental Free Trade Area project.
A subsidiary of Bergmans Security Consultant and Supplies Limited, AfriTrade CMP Limited, was selected for a long term customs modernisation initiative intended to improve border processes, cargo tracking and trade data exchange across participating African countries.
Another company within the group is already involved in Nigeria’s customs modernisation programme.
Tinubu said the development demonstrated that Nigerian technology and expertise could provide solutions beyond the country’s borders.
He argued that African economic integration should increasingly rely on African businesses and institutions capable of building systems suited to the continent’s needs.
The President said Nigeria’s domestic customs reform had created experience that could now contribute to the wider continental market.
AfCFTA Secretary General Wamkele Mene had earlier visited the Nigeria Customs Service headquarters to inspect the Nigerian system.
He described the locally developed B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System as a potential model for other African countries.
The Nigerian platform was first piloted in October 2024 and is being developed alongside cargo tracking, surveillance, risk management and inspection systems.
It is also being linked with the National Single Window launched in March 2026 to create a unified digital gateway for cross border trade processes.
Tinubu said faster and more efficient border procedures would be important to reducing trade costs and realising the objectives of the continental free trade agreement.
