Former United States President Joe Biden’s cancer has spread to his bones and is causing significant pain, his son, Hunter Biden, has disclosed.
Hunter made the revelation in an interview with the BBC while discussing his father’s ongoing battle with cancer, describing the illness as painful and debilitating and saying it had become increasingly difficult for the family to watch.
“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said, adding that the disease had metastasised to Biden’s bones “and further.”
“It’s very painful… very debilitating. Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch,” he said.
Hunter, Biden’s only surviving son, also spoke warmly about his father’s role in the family, describing him as “the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather.”
Biden announced in May 2025, several months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. He subsequently said his treatment was progressing well and expressed appreciation for the prayers and support he had received.
“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” Biden said recently.
At the time of his diagnosis, Biden also expressed optimism about his prognosis, saying doctors expected him to respond to medication.
“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” he said, explaining that his treatment involved taking medication for several weeks.
The former president has in recent months spent more time with his family while receiving treatment. His health has remained a subject of public interest since his final years in office and the 2024 presidential campaign.
Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race in July 2024 and was replaced as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee by then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who subsequently lost the election to Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Biden’s memoir, Promise Me, America, is scheduled for publication in November.
