A group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives has called for the immediate reconvening of the National Assembly to address concerns over budget implementation, alleged unapproved expenditure, security funding and the procedure used in passing the State Police constitutional amendment.
The legislators, operating under the Save Nigeria Group, said the 2024, 2025 and 2026 budgets had suffered repeated delays and rollovers that weakened transparency and legislative oversight.
They also questioned the process used by the House in approving the State Police amendment on July 23, 2026.
According to the lawmakers, the announced vote of 311 members could not be reconciled with the number of lawmakers physically present in the chamber. They alleged that votes transmitted through WhatsApp were included.
The group maintained that constitutional amendments must comply strictly with the required two thirds majority and cannot rely on informal voting arrangements.
The lawmakers also demanded detailed budget implementation reports, disclosure of capital releases to ministries and agencies and an explanation for delayed funding of approved projects.
They called for an independent forensic audit of allegations that some public expenditure had occurred outside approved budgets.
The lawmakers cited reports of a gap between officially recorded spending and government financing requirements and said the issue deserved formal parliamentary investigation.
They also expressed concern that some security agencies had reportedly received limited capital releases despite worsening insecurity.
The group called for the immediate release of approved funds to the Armed Forces, Police, intelligence agencies and other security institutions.
They stressed that their demand was not opposition to State Police or economic reform but a call for constitutional procedure, transparent spending and stronger legislative oversight.
