The Senate has threatened budgetary and disciplinary sanctions against federal ministries, departments and agencies that ignore its resolutions and fail to honor invitations to account for their activities, after adopting a report from its Committee on Legislative Compliance detailing widespread non compliance between July 2023 and December 2025.

Committee Chairman Garba Maidoki said many resolutions on road rehabilitation, disaster management and compensation had been delayed or ignored, citing the federal government’s failure to compensate the family of a child fatally injured by a stray bullet during an anti narcotics operation due to funding constraints, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s refusal to reinstate a former employee despite repeated Senate interventions. He said some lawmakers had also contributed to the problem by sponsoring motions without adequate investigation, and recommended that the Senate impose sanctions on agencies including the Ministries of Works, Health, Power, Petroleum Resources and several others that have failed to comply with its directives.

Separately, the Senate Committee on Sports Development said it would seek disciplinary action against officials of the National Sports Commission after its leadership failed to honour invitations to explain its finances, with Committee Chairman Abdul Ningi directing the commission to submit its approved budgets and details of funds released to national sporting federations since 2023, while asking the Accountant General’s office to independently verify the commission’s financial records.
