The Federal Government has described the Ibom Medical City Project in Akwa Ibom State as a landmark investment capable of transforming Nigeria’s healthcare sector, expanding access to specialised medical services, and positioning the country as a leading healthcare destination in Africa.
The commendation was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, during the unveiling and groundbreaking ceremony of the 350-bed Ibom International Hospital and Ibom Medical City Project in Uyo on Monday.
According to the minister, the project represents the type of strategic investment required to accelerate healthcare sector reforms, improve health outcomes, and reduce the growing dependence on medical tourism abroad.
Prof. Pate noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative and reflects increasing investor confidence in Nigeria’s healthcare ecosystem.
He also credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for creating an enabling environment that encourages investment, drives innovation, and supports the development of critical infrastructure across the country.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing policies and reforms aimed at attracting investment, strengthening health systems, expanding access to quality healthcare services, and supporting the establishment of world-class medical facilities capable of serving both Nigerians and patients from across the region.
The Ibom Medical City Project, which occupies approximately 100 hectares of land, is designed as an integrated healthcare ecosystem that will provide advanced clinical services, support medical research and innovation, create employment opportunities, and enhance specialist healthcare delivery.
The project is expected to feature a 350-bed international hospital, 62 medical specialties, medical residences, pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities, rehabilitation centres, and other healthcare support services.
Speaking at the event, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno described the project as one of the most ambitious healthcare investments in the state’s history.
He said the initiative is aimed at delivering world-class healthcare services while contributing significantly to economic growth and human capital development in the state.
Governor Eno disclosed that the state government has employed 2,844 healthcare professionals since March 2025 and plans to sponsor the overseas training of 100 Akwa Ibom indigenes to prepare them for roles within the facility when it becomes operational.
The Federal Government commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for its vision and commitment to healthcare development, noting that large-scale partnerships and investments are essential to building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system capable of delivering improved outcomes for all Nigerians.
