Security Fears: MFM Suspends Nationwide Night Vigils, Imposes 8 PM Curfew on Services

In a major shift reflecting the country’s worsening security situation, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) has officially suspended all overnight vigils and late-night programmes across its branches nationwide. The megachurch has mandated that all evening activities must now conclude by 8:00 p.m. until further notice.

The directive was handed down via an internal memo dated June 5, 2026, signed by Temitope A. Olawale, the Director of Administration at the church’s International Headquarters in Lagos. According to church leadership, the decision was prompted by the urgent need to prioritize the lives and well-being of its thousands of worshippers. Rather than canceling the popular night vigils entirely, MFM has instructed branches to adapt their schedules.

“Where necessary, vigils may be converted to evening prayer programmes and must be concluded on or before 8:00 p.m.,” the memo stated.

Church officials emphasized that the new policy is a proactive strategy rather than a spiritual retreat. Management stated that these measures are purely precautionary and are intended to safeguard the lives and well-being of members in the face of the current security situation in the country, reassuring worshippers that the core of the ministry’s spiritual activities remains intact.

The directive applies to all MFM ministers, house fellowships, groups, and specialized departments across Nigeria. Regional and branch leadership have been instructed to enforce strict compliance with the 8:00 p.m. curfew, with the church noting that the policy will remain in place pending further security reviews.

MFM’s sweeping policy change comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with heightened anxiety over widespread insecurity. A recent surge in kidnappings, banditry, and targeted attacks on public gatherings has forced both citizens and corporate organizations to drastically alter their daily operations. By scaling back its famous nighttime prayer warfare—a staple of the ministry’s identity—MFM joins a growing list of religious institutions forced to balance faith with the grim realities of current security threats.
