Manchester City kept their Premier League title hopes alive on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Brentford at the Etihad Stadium, closing the gap on leaders Arsenal to just two points.
Pep Guardiola’s side endured a frustrating first hour against a disciplined Brentford defence before Jeremy Doku broke the deadlock with a moment of individual brilliance. The winger cut inside from the left and unleashed a curling effort into the top corner after his initial shot was blocked.
Erling Haaland then added a second goal to reach 26 Premier League goals this season, reacting quickest in the box to turn home from close range after a scramble following a blocked attempt.
Substitute Omar Marmoush sealed the win in stoppage time, finishing calmly to give City a more comfortable scoreline and further improve their goal difference in the tight title race.
The result moves Manchester City within touching distance of league leaders Arsenal, who face West Ham on Sunday knowing that victory in their remaining fixtures would secure the title. Arsenal currently hold a narrow advantage but now face renewed pressure from Guardiola’s side, who also have a game in hand.
City struggled for rhythm in the opening stages, with Brentford creating early openings and testing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Haaland wasted a clear headed chance from close range. Brentford also threatened through set pieces and long throws, keeping the home side under pressure.
Guardiola introduced attacking reinforcements in the second half, including Phil Foden and Marmoush, a move that immediately shifted momentum in City’s favour. Doku’s breakthrough soon followed, energising the Etihad crowd and unlocking Brentford’s resistance.
Despite their dominance after taking the lead, City remained vulnerable at the back, with Brentford briefly appealing for a penalty before Haaland’s close-range finish effectively settled the contest.
Marmoush’s late goal added gloss to the scoreline and ensured City remain firmly in contention as the Premier League title race heads into a decisive final stretch.
