Russian Strike Kills One in Southern Ukraine as Moscow Downs Hundreds of Drones

At least one person has been killed and four others injured following a Russian strike on southern Ukraine, military officials confirmed on Sunday, as Russia reported intercepting hundreds of Ukrainian drones overnight.

Authorities in the frontline city of Kherson said the casualties resulted from a Russian drone attack, underscoring the continued intensity of hostilities in the region.

The latest incident comes amid escalating aerial warfare between both countries, with drones increasingly playing a central role in the conflict.

Russia’s defence ministry announced that its air defence systems shot down 334 Ukrainian drones across more than a dozen regions near its western border. However, officials did not disclose whether the attacks caused any casualties or damage.

Since the outbreak of the Russia–Ukraine War in 2022, Moscow has launched near-nightly drone strikes targeting Ukrainian territory, while Kyiv has carried out retaliatory operations aimed at Russian infrastructure and military assets.

Recent data indicate a sharp increase in drone usage. According to an AFP analysis of figures released by Ukraine’s air force, Russia deployed a record 6,583 long-range drones in April—surpassing March’s previous high.

In a separate instance in late March, Russia reported intercepting 389 Ukrainian drones in a single day, highlighting the scale and frequency of aerial engagements between the two sides.

The growing reliance on drone warfare has raised concerns about further escalation, as both nations continue to intensify their military campaigns with no immediate end to the conflict in sight.
