Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unite and begin preparations for the 2027 general elections following the recent Supreme Court judgment on the party’s leadership dispute.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki described the verdict of the Supreme Court of Nigeria as a decisive moment that should prompt reconciliation and renewed focus within the party.
He urged the party leadership to treat the ruling as an opportunity to rebuild and strengthen the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.
The apex court had nullified the March 29, 2026 national convention held in Ibadan, declaring it invalid along with all decisions arising from it. The court also affirmed the Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara-led National Working Committee as the legally recognised leadership of the party, a position backed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Saraki noted that the judgment aligned with his earlier stance that the Ibadan convention should not have been held, advocating instead for an interim arrangement to prevent prolonged litigation and internal divisions.
He recalled presenting this position at various party meetings and to a committee of elders led by Ambassador Hassan Adamu, the Wakili of Adamawa, during consultations on resolving the crisis.
“Now that we have all ventilated our views and exhausted the legal channels of expressing our grievances, and the apex court has given its verdict, there is now only one PDP,” Saraki said.
He stressed the need for members across all factions to set aside differences and work collectively to reposition the party across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
“Our dialogue should now focus on rebuilding the party, making it stronger, and presenting it as a credible alternative platform for Nigerians seeking good governance,” he added.
Saraki also urged those who lost in the legal battle to view the situation as an opportunity for reconciliation and renewed commitment to the party’s success.
“The focus should not be on who wins or loses. Those who lost in court should see their return to rebuild the party as another victory,” he said.
He expressed optimism about the PDP’s prospects in the next electoral cycle, noting that the party remains a viable platform for aspiring candidates.
“We are happy that come 2027, PDP will be on the ballot,” Saraki stated.
