President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday accused Russia of rejecting efforts to halt hostilities, saying Moscow had chosen to continue attacks despite Ukraine’s call for a unilateral ceasefire.
In a statement posted on social media, Zelensky said Russia’s actions showed a clear disregard for attempts to save lives.
“Russia’s choice is an obvious spurning of a ceasefire and of saving lives,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader added that Kyiv would respond accordingly, noting that Ukraine had pledged to “act in kind” following Russia’s own proposal for a temporary ceasefire tied to its May 9 World War II Victory Day commemorations in Moscow.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the two countries, with both sides announcing separate ceasefire timelines amid continued fighting and limited coordination.
Observers say the lack of a mutually agreed truce continues to complicate efforts to de-escalate the conflict, which has persisted for more than two years.
