More than 300 women’s rights organisations have criticised the Senate’s confirmation of Abayomi Sunday Fasina as a Nigerian ambassador, arguing that pending allegations and court cases should have received greater consideration.
The coalition, operating through Womanifesto, said petitions had been submitted to the Senate leadership before the confirmation.
The groups disputed statements that no petition was before lawmakers and said acknowledged submissions dated June 25 and June 29, 2026 had been sent to the Senate President and the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
They also challenged the description of Fasina as a Lagos State nominee, claiming he is from Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The coalition referred to two cases before the National Industrial Court involving allegations of sexual harassment, victimisation and employment related retaliation.
The allegations remain contested and have not been finally determined by the courts.
The organisations also questioned reliance on previous findings by the Police and the governing authorities of the Federal University Oye Ekiti as sufficient grounds for clearance.
They argued that pending judicial proceedings required caution and said complainants and civil society representatives should have been given an opportunity to address the Senate.
The coalition cited constitutional fair hearing principles and said ambassadorial appointments should command public confidence.
It also referred to an investigation reportedly opened by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission in 2025 and said related litigation remained unresolved.
The groups urged public institutions to ensure that allegations of workplace harassment are handled through transparent and credible processes while respecting the presumption of innocence and the authority of the courts.
