A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has rejected President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that the opposition party was responsible for Nigeria’s present hunger and economic hardship.
Responding to comments reportedly made during a campaign event in Kaduna, factional spokesman Jangundu Mohammed said the governing All Progressives Congress should account for current policies rather than repeatedly invoke the record of previous administrations.
He challenged the government to explain its plans to make food affordable, support agriculture, improve electricity, lower transport costs, create employment and strengthen security. The spokesman said the PDP could recognize individual achievements of the current administration without accepting that historical circumstances excused present shortcomings.
The dispute reflects a widening political argument over responsibility for rising living costs ahead of the 2027 elections. While previous policy choices can affect economic conditions, the current administration remains accountable for decisions taken during its tenure.
The statements are partisan positions. Their competing claims about economic performance should be evaluated against independently sourced data on prices, employment, incomes and public spending rather than accepted as established fact.
