A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has criticized APC governors who oppose political arrangements involving the former Rivers State governor, saying their concern should be their own performance in office.
The group said Wike had the constitutional right to support President Bola Tinubu while maintaining political relationships within the PDP.
In a statement by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the bloc argued that backing Tinubu did not amount to abandoning the PDP or endorsing APC candidates in every contest.
The group said it intended to field candidates for other elective positions even if Wike supported Tinubu at the presidential level.
It accused APC governors of becoming uncomfortable because strong PDP candidates could challenge them in state and legislative races.
Those claims are partisan arguments and do not establish likely electoral outcomes.
The PDP group said governors confident in their records should welcome political competition rather than seek to prevent rival candidates from emerging.
It also praised Wike’s record in political mobilization and project delivery and argued that his support could still benefit Tinubu’s presidential campaign.
The statement followed a resolution by APC governors that they would not support any alliance or arrangement capable of weakening official party candidates.
The exchange highlights the increasingly complicated cross-party relationships emerging ahead of 2027, where some politicians may support candidates outside their formal party structures in selected races while remaining loyal to their own parties elsewhere.
