Trump Advocates Self-Regulation as US Pushes Ahead on Artificial Intelligence

United States President Donald Trump has called for greater self-regulation within the artificial intelligence industry, urging technology companies to take primary responsibility for ensuring the safe development of increasingly advanced AI systems.

Trump made the remarks during a White House meeting with executives from some of the world’s leading technology firms, including Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and xAI.

According to the president, self-regulation remains critical to balancing innovation and safety, while existing government agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) continue to provide oversight where necessary.

The meeting focused on the future of artificial intelligence and ways to maintain the United States’ leadership in the rapidly evolving sector amid growing global competition.

Trump said there was broad consensus among industry leaders that AI companies should play a central role in monitoring and regulating their own technologies, rather than being subjected to what he described as excessive government restrictions.
