Tinubu Vows to Defeat Terrorists, Bandits, Secure Release of Captives

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to defeating terrorism and banditry across the country, declaring that the Federal Government will not surrender to criminal elements and will continue efforts to secure the release of all Nigerians held captive.

The President made the pledge during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration. His message was delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that the safety and security of citizens remain a top priority for his administration, describing recent attacks, kidnappings, and insecurity as painful reminders of the work still required to restore peace and stability nationwide.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation,” the President stated.

He emphasized that the safe return of all persons in captivity remains a national priority, noting that security agencies and relevant institutions are receiving the necessary support and resources to protect lives, secure communities, and defend the country’s territorial integrity.

Addressing the nation’s economic challenges, Tinubu acknowledged the hardship being experienced by many households and assured citizens that his administration is working diligently to reduce socio-economic pressures through sustainable development initiatives and democratic dividends.

According to Akume, the government is fully aware of the difficulties facing Nigerians, including insecurity, kidnappings, displacement, and economic hardship.

“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said, adding that the President remains committed to addressing the challenges with compassion and determination.

The President also congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as a reflection of the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.

He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, many of whom, he noted, endured persecution, injury, and even death in pursuit of democratic governance.

With preparations gradually building toward the 2027 general elections, Tinubu urged Nigerian youths not to allow themselves to be used for political violence, thuggery, misinformation campaigns, ethnic division, or religious intolerance.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience,” Akume quoted the President as saying.

The SGF also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media, and families to promote peace, tolerance, and national unity as the country approaches another electoral cycle.

Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence, while commending members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices in defending the nation and sustaining democratic governance.

He urged Nigerians to honour the legacy of June 12 by working toward a nation where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are secure, and every citizen can live with dignity and hope.

The Democracy Day Service, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” was attended by several top government officials and dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, among others.
