President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), for his continued contributions to national development, peacebuilding and democratic stability in Nigeria and across Africa.
The President also directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allocate a suitable parcel of land in Abuja for the construction of an office complex for the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre (AAARC).
Tinubu made the announcement on Saturday in Abuja during the public presentation of three books in honour of the former military leader. The books, titled A Call of Duty: My Autobiography, Nigeria’s Grand Patriot, and Mediating for Peace in Africa, were unveiled as part of activities marking General Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President described the former Head of State as a respected elder statesman who has remained committed to promoting peace, national unity, democratic governance and responsible political engagement through the National Peace Committee.
Tinubu noted that the large turnout of distinguished guests from within and outside Nigeria at the event reflected the immense respect and admiration General Abdulsalami commands both nationally and internationally.
He praised the former leader’s role in fostering dialogue, conflict resolution and democratic consolidation, describing his contributions as invaluable to Nigeria’s political development and Africa’s peacebuilding efforts.
Speaking on the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre, the President said the initiative aligns with the ideals and values that the former Head of State has championed throughout his public service career.
“The establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar African Resource Centre is a worthy initiative that aligns with the values General Abubakar has championed throughout his life,” the President said.
“In recognition of its importance, I hereby direct the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to allocate a suitable parcel of land within the Federal Capital Territory for the development of the Centre and the advancement of its mission.”
The proposed centre is expected to serve as a platform for research, policy dialogue, leadership development and peacebuilding initiatives across Africa.
The event attracted prominent political leaders, diplomats, traditional rulers, academics and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of General Abdulsalami Abubakar and his contributions to Nigeria and the African continent.
