President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated four new National Commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill vacancies arising from the expiration of tenures.

The nominations have been forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Among the nominees is Dr. Bala Bila, who was reappointed as National Commissioner representing the North-East geopolitical zone.

The new National Commissioner nominees include Professor Mustapha Aliu, nominated to replace Professor Abdullahi Zuru as the North-West representative, and Bashir Muhammed Umar, who is expected to succeed Professor Muhammad Adamu as the National Commissioner representing the North-Central zone.

President Tinubu also nominated Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, currently the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, as the National Commissioner representing the South-West. She is set to replace Professor Cornelius Ajayi, whose tenure expires on October 24.

For the position of Resident Electoral Commissioners, the President nominated retired Permanent Secretary Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State and Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who is expected to replace Professor Saidu Ahmed Babura.

President Tinubu urged the Senate to expedite consideration and confirmation of the nominees to ensure the electoral body is fully constituted ahead of the forthcoming general elections scheduled for January.

The nominations form part of efforts to strengthen INEC’s leadership structure and ensure continuity in the management of the nation’s electoral processes.
