President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran Nollywood actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.

In a condolence message, President Tinubu described the late actor as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished thespians and a towering figure whose illustrious career spanned theatre, television and film in Nigeria and internationally.

Olu Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London before establishing a career in British television and international film. He later returned to Nigeria, where he became one of the most influential figures in the country’s film industry.

The veteran actor received numerous industry honours and awards for his contributions to the performing arts and was also conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

President Tinubu commended Jacobs for his contribution to the development and professionalisation of Nigeria’s entertainment industry, noting that his talent, discipline and dedication inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.

He also praised the late actor’s ability to bring depth, dignity and authenticity to the characters he portrayed, earning him admiration both in Nigeria and internationally.

“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn,” Tinubu said.

The President noted that Nigeria’s creative practitioners have played an important role in shaping the country’s cultural identity, international image and economic development, adding that Olu Jacobs made a significant contribution to that legacy.

Tinubu extended his condolences to the Jacobs family, particularly the actor’s wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children, relatives, colleagues in the Nigerian film industry and the wider creative community.

The President prayed for the repose of the soul of the celebrated actor and for strength for his family and loved ones to bear the loss.
