Tinubu Marks Alake at 70, Praises Decades of Journalism and Public Service

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, on his 70th birthday, describing him as a dependable political ally and public servant whose career has spanned journalism, democratic activism, political communication and government.

In a personal tribute marking Alake’s birthday on October 6, Tinubu said their relationship had lasted several decades and praised the minister for being forthright, loyal and consistent in his positions.

The president said Alake had built a record of service around hard work, professional excellence and a commitment to social justice. He particularly highlighted his years in journalism, when he worked as a reporter and editor and used the profession to challenge political and social problems.

Tinubu also recalled Alake’s role during military rule, describing him as one of the journalists who opposed dictatorship and human rights abuses while supporting the restoration of democratic government.

Alake later moved into public administration and served for eight years as Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy during Tinubu’s tenure as governor. Tinubu credited him with helping to reshape the state’s approach to public information, political strategy and government communication.

The president said Alake had shown an ability to adapt to new responsibilities and linked that quality to his current assignment in the solid minerals sector. He said the minister’s work had attracted attention within Nigeria and internationally, noting his role as Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group.

The federal government has placed greater emphasis on mining as part of its effort to diversify the economy beyond oil. The policy direction includes attracting investment, improving regulation, confronting illegal mining and increasing the economic value Nigeria derives from its mineral resources.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu also congratulated Alake, describing him as a respected journalist, communication strategist and administrator whose career had influenced media, politics and governance.

Sanwo Olu recalled Alake’s service in Lagos between 1999 and 2007 and praised his contributions to the state’s development and to the current federal administration.

Both Tinubu and Sanwo Olu wished the minister continued good health and more years of service to the country.
