President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, backing the initiative with a special takeoff grant of N15 billion to finance priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the approvals, noting that the decision fulfils provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy Establishment Act of 2021, which specifically envisaged the expansion of the main Academy in Wudil, Kano State, into multiple campuses across the country.
The grant will be drawn from the TETFund 2026 allocation. The Erinja site was recommended by a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Geidam; the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa; officials of the Federal Ministry of Education; the Inspector-General of Police; and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission. The group weighed student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower requirements of the Nigerian Police Force.
President Tinubu also reconstituted the 16-member governing council of the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, appointing Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Geidam as chairman. Other members of the council include the chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police, and one representative each from the Federal Ministries of Education, Finance, and Justice.
Six additional members were appointed to represent the six geopolitical zones: Babagana Zannah Adam, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, for the North-East; Emmanuel Torkuma Manger for the North-Central; Maigari Abati Dikko, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, for the North-West; Dubem A. Obaze for the South-East; Ajibogere Toyin for the South-West; and Udom Udo Ekpoudom, a retired Deputy Inspector-General, for the South-South.
The Academy Commandant, the Provost, and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of training will serve as ex-officio members, while the Registrar of the Academy will act as secretary to the council.
