President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, as he marks his 100th birthday on May 11.
In a statement commemorating the centenary celebration, Tinubu described Fasoranti as a symbol of integrity, disciplined leadership, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals and national development.
The President praised the veteran politician and pro-democracy activist for his lifelong service to Nigeria, noting that his contributions to education, politics, and Yoruba unity remain enduring legacies.
According to Tinubu, Fasoranti distinguished himself through his principled lifestyle, dedication to noble causes, and commitment to the values of honesty and good governance.
Highlighting Fasoranti’s educational background, the President noted that the elder statesman studied at the University of Ibadan, formerly University College Ibadan, before furthering his education in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Tinubu also commended Fasoranti’s contributions to the education sector through his work as a teacher and founder of several schools in Ondo State, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.
The President further reflected on Fasoranti’s political journey as a disciple of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and a member of the defunct Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria.
He recalled Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin, describing his tenure as one marked by financial prudence and integrity.
Tinubu also acknowledged Fasoranti’s role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle during military rule, noting that he became one of the leading voices against dictatorship and a strong advocate for democracy and Yoruba unity.
The President described Fasoranti as the widely recognised leader of Afenifere following internal divisions within the group after the death of Abraham Adesanya.
He noted that despite surviving an assassination attempt during the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha and enduring personal tragedies, including the death of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, Fasoranti remained steadfast and resilient.
Tinubu also expressed gratitude for Fasoranti’s support and prayers throughout his political journey, especially during the 2023 presidential campaign.
The President recalled visiting the elder statesman in Akure before the election, where Fasoranti prayed for his victory and expressed confidence that he would witness Tinubu’s emergence as president.
He prayed for continued good health and long life for the nonagenarian, thanking him for his enduring service to Nigeria and continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
